Alternative Finishes

Below is a list of the available finishes across our product range. Not every product is available in every finish. Please Note: Some finishes will vary per manufacturer. Please contact us if you have any queries as to whether your chosen products will match.

Polished Brass (Lacquered) & Satin Brass

Brass is an alloy made up of copper and zinc. The colour of brass varies depending on the copper content of the metal. Brass is non-corrosive and will not stain the wood. Unless specified our polished brass products are lacquered preserve the bright finish. Under no circumstances should a polish or abrasive cleaners be used whilst the lacquer is in good order. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and an occasional application of furniture wax will prolong the life of the lacquer. Like varnish or paint, lacquer may break down after exposure to atmospheric conditions. Should this occur the remaining traces of lacquer can be removed with a paint stripper. The item will then need to be re-polished with a good quality metal polish and waxed. All our brass products are solid.

Unlacquered Polished Brass

Many of our brass products can be specially ordered unlacquered. The unlacquered brass item will come in a bright-mirrored finish but in time will oxidize to a soft brown patina. These products can be re-polished using a non-abrasive metal cleaner such as “Duraglit” wadding polish.

Black Iron & Sheradized Black Iron

Our black ironware is made from malleable iron, a rust resistant finish is applied and then two coats of black powder paint are applied. It is recommended that items be occasionally wiped with a lightly oiled cloth. This is especially important for items fitted in exposed conditions.

Note: If black iron is to be situated near the sea we recommend that it is "Sheradized". This process will in essence galvanise the iron piece before it is painted insuring that it will not rust. Some black iron products can be specially ordered with a Sheradized finish.

Wrought Iron

Hand forged ironware. These items are finished with a bees-wax coat to enhance the natural colour of the iron. Due to the nature of the products and coating they will rust if exposed to the elements. This product will need to be regularly waxed to maintain its finish, though in many situations it is simply left to age in a natural way. No two pieces are alike and the sizes and the finish of this product may vary to a small degree.
